Professor Janet McCalman

Professor Janet McCalman is best known for her three prize-winning histories of Melbourne life; Struggletown, Journeyings and Sex and Suffering: a women's hospital and women's health, as well as her former long-running column in The Age.

appointments and qualifications

She holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and in the Faculty of Arts, and teaches the new interdisciplinary university breadth subject, An Ecological History of Humanity.

In 2006, Janet was part of the review panel for the University's Advanced Medical Science program and a member of research administration for the Monash University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

She is a former member of the Australian Historical Association Advisory Committee to the National Archives of Australia and the Editorial Board of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

In 1999, she convened the Annual Symposium of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, 'Humane Societies' in Canberra.

research

Janet's current research includes reconstructing succeeding generations of descendants from the convicts transported to Van Diemen's Land between 1803 and 1852.

Numerous awards include the NSW Premier's History Awards in Community and Regional History and the Victorian Community and Local History Award for best publication.
