Steven Carroll
Writer
Steven Carroll is one of Australia's finest writers. His latest book, The Lost Life, is a moving, lyrical novel about poetry, inspiration and the yearning for a life that may never be lived.
Steven's first novel, Remember Me, Jimmy James, was published in 1992. This was followed by Momoko (1994), The Love Song of Lucy McBride (1998), The Art of the Engine Driver (2001), The Gift of Speed (2004) and The Time We Have Taken (2007).
Steven was born in Melbourne and grew up in Glenroy. He went to La Trobe University and taught English in high schools before playing in bands during the 1970s. After leaving the music scene he began writing as a playwright and became the theatre critic for The Sunday Age. He recently gave up his lecturing post at RMIT to write full time.
In 2008, The Time We Have Taken won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book‚ South East Asia and South Pacific region, as well as the 2008 Miles Franklin Award – Australia's most prestigious literary prize.
The Art of the Engine Driver and The Gift of Speed were both short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award. The Art of the Engine Driver was also short-listed for France's Prix Femina literary award for the best foreign novel in 2005.
